Thumb supports effectively treat Gamekeeper’s Thumb, collateral ligament injuries, tendonitis, and thumb sprains caused by trauma, sports, or overuse. For short-term stabilization, these splints limit motion at both MP and CMC joints while minimizing impact on hand function.
How to choose:
- Determine level of immobilization required.
- Select amount of customization needed.
- Choose material desired: metal stay, thermoplastic, or aluminum core splints.
Metal stay splints offer moderate immobilization and are great for milder injuries and ongoing joint protection. Level of stabilization is determined by length and construction of stay. Body of splint may be elastic, neoprene, or leather. Elastic offers greatest comfort for all-day wear, promoting maximum breathability. Neoprene applies compressive support to help reduce edema and add soothing warmth. Leather offers a durability that is uniquely suited for industrial work applications.
Thermoplastic splints offer superior immobilization and are highly customizable. They incorporate thin, supportive plastic that surrounds injured area for immobilization during recovery and maximum protection upon return to activity. Foam lining or sleeves offer greater comfort because sweat tends to build up when plastic is in direct contact with skin. Preformed versions (like
SportsFit™ Thumb Orthosis and
European ThumbSpica) can be used off the shelf or easily customized using a water bath or heat gun. Padded models (like the Custom-Molded Thumb) offer added comfort and compliance.
Aluminum core splints (
FREEDOM® ThumbKeeper) are extremely lightweight and allow quick immobilization anytime, anywhere — no tools or heat required. Shape aluminum shell by hand to custom-fit any patient and reform as needed. These splints offer good immobilization but are not intended for longer-term functional use.
