Scar management
Elastomers and Gels For decades doctors have recognized silicone elastomers as an effective scar management therapy. When applied over scars daily, elastomers soften, smooth, and flatten scars to restore skin to a more natural surface and skin color. Silicone gel sheeting is also effective in helping to reduce the appearance of all types of scars, including new or old scars, keloids, hypertrophic scars, and other scars caused by surgery, injury, trauma, and burns.
Newer-Generation Scar Care Sheets Silipos® Gel-Care® gel sheeting is made of non-silicone gel and natural botanical oils, antioxidants, vitamins, and emollients that moisturize and condition the skin and scar tissue. The gentle cushioning of the gel helps to ease the painful itching and burning sensations common with scarring, and the added lubrication protects against friction and shearing.
Gel Options Most gel options are available in sheets, strips, discs, and even body wraps. These options either come with fabric backing or without backing to allow the gel to be attached to a splint or a brace with adhesive or hook-and-loop fastener.
Product Life Gel sheeting usually lasts 25-90 days (depending on manufacturer/brand). This is not because the product breaks down, but because bodily oils and fabric fibers attach to the tacky side of the silicone and affect adhesiveness.
Other Uses In addition to scar management, gel pads are effective for pressure point relief anywhere friction or pressure is a concern — particularly under splints, braces, or shoes.
Note: Scar reduction products should only be applied after wounds have fully closed.
